Newton Jones, of Covington, died January 6, 2009, at Emory University Hospital, at the age of 72. Son of the late Willie Frank and Blonnie Hilton Jones, he was of the Baptist faith, was a United States Army veteran, and had been a resident of Newton County for 31 years. Mr. Jones enjoyed scuba diving, fishing, working on cars, and reading. He was a very friendly person and dearly loved his family. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Kennedy -Jones of Covington; daughters, Rita Jones of Covington and Barbara Overby of Conyers; grandchildren, Buffy Jablonski, Nicole Williams, Herman Overby, Jr., Jenny McWilliams, Jackie Salois; fourteen great-grandchildren; sister, Jennie Whiddon of Dothan, AL; brother, Donnell Cannon of FL; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Jones will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2:00 PM, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, with Pastor Lynn Head, Pastor Larry Carter, and Rev. Clifton Brown officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 8, from 4-8 PM.
