Anna Ruth Johnson Ivey was born in Covington on Septe. 5, 1929 to the late Mr. Johnny Johnson and Mrs. Sweetie Wyatt Johnson. 

Anna Ruth attended Newton County Schools and was an excellent student. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and involved herself in a variety of youth activities. In the late 1950’s she moved to Norwalk, Connecticut to make a better life for herself and her family.

On Dec. 20, 1960, in Norwalk, Connecticut she met the love of her life; John C. Ivey, they formed a lifelong bond and union for 29 years. During that time, they raised successfully four children. 

As outspoken as she may have been, you never had to wonder where she stood on an issue. Not only was she willing to share her thoughts, but was always ready to offer whatever she had, with anyone who needed a meal, a prayer or just a hug. Her most enjoyable pleasure was to be surrounded by family; taking pictures, sharing stories, gardening and church activities.  

 On Jan. 6, 2019, Anna Ruth Johnson Ivey passed away in Covington at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her parents, Johnny Johnson and Sweetie Johnson; husband, John C. Ivey; son, Michael Sylvester Allen; six brothers and five sisters.

She is survived by her sons, Arthur (Rose) Johnson, Urbana, IL, John David (Gloria) Ivey, Durham, North Carolina; daughter, Ellis (Gwendolyn Louise) Ivey Woods, Orlando, Florida.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of other relatives and caring friends.  

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at Good Hope Baptist Church, 1142 Highway 162, Covington, with the Rev. Eddie J. Tomlinson officiating.
