Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, Lillie Gastley Tobey Smith, passed away peacefully, October 9, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer; surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. Mom was a substitute teacher for many years at Stockbridge High School, and much to our chagrin she was always first in line to volunteer to chaperone our high school dances, trips, and activities. She faced adversity with 3 very young children after being widowed in 1960. She struggled to survive; working hard to provide for our family. As children, we never fully understood the sacrifices made; but as adults we can certainly say we appreciate everything mom taught us. In 1979, mom married Jake Smith and we automatically had two brothers brought into our family; and once again our family home was filled with love and laughter. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Claude Randall Tobey (1960), husband, Jake Smith (1992), son, Don Smith (1991), grandson, Jimmy Smith (1984), mother and father Lillie Pearl and James Henry Gastley, seven sisters and brothers. Survivors include Randy Tobey, Patricia Tobey Kinkopf (Dennis), Vicki Tobey, Jack Smith (Ann); sisters, Margaret Douglas, Peggy Neill and Eureka Jackson, 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Our sincere gratitude to Althea, Roxanne, Junia, Nadine, and all the wonderful and loving staff at In Home Hospice in Conyers. They are truly angels sent from God above. Visitation conducted by Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., Covington, Georgia, Thursday, October 15, 2009, from 1-3 PM; with immediate graveside service at East View Cemetery in Conyers, Georgia. Flowers graciously accepted, or donations to At Home Health Care & Hospice, 1380 Milstead Ave., NE, Suite G, Conyers, GA 30012.
