Laurie Stone Smith, age 88, died at Highgate Senior Living in Bellingham, WA, on March 12, 2009. She was born in Atlanta, GA on January 9, 1921 to James H. Stone and Laurie Elizabeth Camp. After marrying J. T. Smith, they left their home state in 1956, moving to California, where Mr. Smith was stationed in the Navy. They returned to Georgia in 1987, living on Starr Dial Road in Oxford for twenty years, became active members of Shiloh United Methodist Church and were also members of the Golden Eagle Club for many years. Laurie was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, knitting, crocheting, and sewing but most of all enjoyed being a grandmother. She excelled at all. A true baseball fan, Laurie followed her favorite team, the Atlanta Braves, faithfully through the years. She was a devoted mother, wife, sister, grandmother, and a good friend and neighbor and will be missed by all who knew her. Laurie was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, James T. Smith, son, James Thomas Smith, Jr., sister, Jean Brinsfield, and brother, James H. Stone, Jr. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Peg Smith of Bellingham, WA; grandchildren, Jenna (Tyler) Byrnes of Bellingham, Evan Smith (Samantha Perroni) of Eugene, OR; great-grandchildren, Hannah Byrnes and Kai Byrnes of Bellingham; sister, Lucy Lockridge of Conyers; sister-in-law, Joan Stone of Oxford; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service for Mrs. Smith will be held on Sunday, April 5, 2:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, with Rev. Mike Nickolich officiating.
