Jerry Oliver Capes, of Covington, passed away March 30, 2017, at the age of 83. Mr. Capes was son of the late Oliver Jefferson Capes and the late Ethel Mary Moon Capes. He is survived by his wife of 34 years Barbara Capes, daughter Joy Casper, daughter and son-in-law Kim and Maurice Carter, son and daughter-in-law Doug and Rena Reeves, daughter and son-in-law Laura and Fred Borgini, brother and sister-in-law Dr. Johnny & Peggy Capes, grandchildren Rebecca and McKenzie Reeves, Saxton and Milan Ray, Randy and Justin Westbrook, and great granddaughter Daylynn Dennis. Mr. Capes is also survived by nieces Sheri Roberts and husband Matt, Gigi Edwards and husband John, and nephew Dr. Jeff Capes and wife Wendy.
In recent years, Mr. Capes split his time between Covington and St. Simons Island, Georgia. He was beloved in both communities for his efforts to help those facing difficult challenges in life. Mr. Capes attended the University of Georgia and graduated from Georgia State University and Emory Law School. He practiced law in Covington for over 30 years, served as Covington Municipal Court Judge from 1996 to 2001, and – with father Oliver and brother Johnny – developed and managed an extensive portfolio of commercial warehouses and other real estate in Newton County.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, in the Chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday, April 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. and before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Serenity House of Covington, Inc. at P.O.
