James William Head, Sr., 91, of Covington, passed away Monday, November 2, 2015 at Piedmont Newton Medical Center.

He was born in Rutledge to the late W.M. and Mattie Glass Head. Mr. Head proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. He retired after working for over 60 years between Porterdale Mill and Hanover Wire in Covington, where he served as a supervisor. Mr. Head was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church. He umpired and coached Little League Baseball. He loved all children and after raising his own, helped raise everyone else’s. One of his fondest memories was building and then floating a boat with the neighborhood children. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 73 years Mazie Ellis Head and his daughter Barbara Roberts.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Diane and Owen Madsen of Covington; sons Mickey Head of St. Simons Island and James W. Head, Jr. of Rutledge; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and two dogs Chuckie and Rocket.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 6, 2015 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with Rev. Dickey Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park.
