James Thomas Duke of Covington, passed away August 24, 2010, at the age of 79. James was a long time resident of Newton County and was a Korean War veteran. James worked for Bibb Manufacturing and Mobil Chemical. He loved gardening, working in his yard, and a good debate - which he never lost. He enjoyed coaching softball, and coached his wife, sister and daughters’ softball teams. He also enjoyed softball as a spectator. James loved his family unconditionally. James was preceded in death by his parents, William Thurman and Mary Irene (Bailey) Duke. Survivors include his wife Emma Frances (Rider) Duke of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Evon D. and Gregg Cowan of Social Circle, Ronda D. and David Neff of Conyers; grandchildren, Dustin Piper, Danielle Neff, both of Conyers, Ashley and Jared Coles, Brittany and Jeremy Coles, all of Social Circle; brother, Luther Duke of Columbus; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mr. Duke will be held Friday, August 27, 2010, 1:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, with Dr. Alan Posey officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, August 26, from 5-8 PM.
