Dr. William Archer Reid, age 87, of Mansfield, died November 1, 2010. A member of Pine Grove Presbyterian Church in Covington, Dr. Reid attended Tulane University, Medical College of Georgia in Augusta from 1947 – 1949 and Emory University School of Medicine from 1949 – 1951 where he graduated with a degree in medicine. His internship and residency was at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta from 1951 from 1956. Dr. Reid received multiple teaching and hospital appointments in Atlanta. Hospital appointments included Past President, Georgia Baptist Medical Center; Chief of Surgery, Atlanta West Hospital; Chief of General Surgery, West Paces Ferry Hospital; Chief of General Surgery, Georgia Baptist Medical Center; Chief of Staff, West Paces Ferry Hospital; Chief of Surgical Training Program, Crawford W. Long Hospital; Liaison Officer, American College of Surgeons, Cancer Division and numerous other appointments. Society memberships included American Medical Association, Medical Association of Georgia, Medical Association of Atlanta, and American College of Surgeons. Dr. Reid penned many articles in the medical field that were published. He served in the Armed Forces, U.S. Naval Reserve, Lt. Commander PT Boat Squadron, from 1942 – 1946 in the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Pacific Theaters of War (World War II). Dr. Reid is preceded in death by his parents, John S. and Florence Sims Reid, brother, John S. Reid, Jr., and his daughter, Cheryl H. Reid. Survivors include is wife, Maudenia C. Reid of Mansfield; sons, William Archer Reid, Jr., Darrell C. Reid, Christian A. Reid and George L. Reid and wife, Lee; daughters, Cathy Reid Lawler and husband, Robert, Athena Reid Letson; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A Memorial Service for Dr. Reid will be held, Saturday, November 13, 2010, 11:00 A.M., at Pine Grove Presbyterian Church, 2062 Highway 229, Mansfield. A private interment will be held at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta at 3:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to V.S. Dameron, Clerk of Session, 138 Womack Road, Covington, GA 30016.
