A 56-year-old woman was attacked and seriously injured Saturday morning when her nephew's pit bull attacked her.

According to reports from the Covington Police Department, when officers arrived they spoke with the dog's owner who reportedly told them every day his aunt walks through the fence on the right side of his home, heading around the backyard where he resides with his grandparents, but on this day, he heard his brother saying "get off" and ran outside to see what was happening.

The man said that he had let his 5-year-old pit bull D-Man go outside moments before to relieve himself. When he got outside, he allegedly saw his aunt lying on the ground with the dog on top of her. He got the dog off, helped his aunt to a chair and had his grandmother call 911 for help.

When EMS arrived to transport his aunt to the hospital, the man said he took the dog to his mother's home on Deep Step Road, took his .380 caliber handgun and shot the dog in the head, killing it. He then buried it in the backyard of his mother's house. When Animal Control informed the man that they would need to check the dog for rabies, he reportedly took them to his mother's house and dug up the dog's body.

The woman who had been attacked was treated to Newton Medical Center for a broken hip and arm, as well as a bite to the neck that punctured her windpipe.
