Unemployment up in Newton

State statistics show local unemployment numbers increased slightly in June, the latest month reported.

Preliminary statistics on the Georgia Department of Labor’s website show the county’s unemployment rate as 8.4 percent, up from 8 percent in May. The rate in June 2013 was 10 percent.

According to the state, the county’s workforce in June totaled 48,016, with 43,971 holding jobs. The number of unemployed was 4,045, up from 3,806 in May. Again, the number of unemployed in June 2013 was 4,805.

Georgia’s overall unemployment rate increased from 7.2 percent in May to 7.4 percent in June. According to the Department of Labor, 353,700 people were unemployed in June, compared to 345,390 in May.

Unemployment percentages in neighboring counties in June included: Rockdale, 8.5 percent; Henry, 7.9 percent; Butts, 9.4 percent; Jasper, 7.2 percent; Morgan, 6.6 percent; and Walton, 6.9 percent.
