Tragedy struck Newton County Theme School at Ficquett this week with the death of a 5-year-old kindergarten student Monday.

According to the Newton County School System (NCSS), the student was playing on the school playground when a medical emergency occurred.

Emergency personnel were called shortly after noon. Teachers started CPR immediately, according to Covington Police Department Capt. Craig Treadwell. Upon administration of CPR, the student did not respond, Treadwell said.

She was transported to the hospital right away, where she passed away. The cause of death is not known at this time.
The student’s name has not been released out of respect for the family’s privacy.

“Faculty and staff at the school are grieving right now and we know that some students may also have difficulty coping with this terrible tragedy,” a statement from NCSS said.

Counselors were on hand at the school Monday to provide support to those affected.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the family as we know they are truly devastated,” the release said. “Grief doesn’t even begin to describe what the students and staff at Newton County Theme School are feeling right now. We know that this family is absolutely devastated and our thoughts and prayers are with them. We ask that the community keep them in their prayers as well.

“The students, parents, and employees at Newton County Theme School are like one big family and we’re already seeing the love and support they are showing for each other and most importantly, for the family of that beautiful little girl.“
