The Georgia Department of Transportation has sent the city of Covington an agreement to allow local workers to maintain the State Road 142 median, as well as the landscaping at Interstate 20’s exits 90, 92 and 93. But should the city sign on? Maybe, was Monday’s City Council consensus.

“I think it might be pretty expensive,” deputy city manager Billy Bouchillon said. “I just want (the project, bids and all) to come back to the council before you approve it.”

The city is already maintaining parts of U.S. 278 and S.R. 142. Bouchillon recommended the city request, receive and approve bids for maintaining the new sections and interchanges to see if the idea is fiscally feasible before signing the agreement with the DOT.

The council unanimously agreed.

Councilwoman Hawnethia Williams said the city should carefully weigh the expense against the ability to actually regularly maintain and beautify the all-important highway and I-20 exits.
