It took about five years to get funds and to complete the process to move the 186-year-old home, said Mike Owens, owner of Magnolia Manor, the new location of the home. The Historic Preservation Society of Social Circle (HPSSC) had pledged $10,000 for anyone who promised to move and restore the home, which was a significant chunk of the fundraising efforts needed to make the move official. The money was officially presented to Owens Monday by HPSSC President Dena Johnston and Treasurer Charles Thompson. Owens, utility workers and others who are invested in the preservation of the building worked for hours Tuesday and Wednesday, putting two massive steel beams under the home, taking off the porch, removing power lines and obstacles and driving it down the street, causing quite a sight. Utility workers used long, fiber glass poles to hold up some power lines out of the way. Once restoration is completed, the home will be used as a cottage at Magnolia Manor that families can rent nightly. “It’s a piece of history,” Owens said. “The house, that’s what was connected to the pioneer of historic preservation in Social Circle. And now it will have a purpose.”
