The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 a.m. Sunday for a wide swath of central Georgia, including Newton County.

Rain from earlier today has changed to snow and will begin to taper off.

An additional half inch of snow can be expected through sunrise, for a total accumulation of up to 2 inches.

The temperatures will fall overnight into the mid 20s and remain below freezing until midday Sunday.

"Any wet or slushy roads will freeze creating hazardous driving conditions," warns the statement.

Drivers are warned to be prepared for snowy roads and hazardous driving conditions.

Areas to the north of Athens and Atlanta are expected to see 3 to 8 inches of snow.

White Christmases are rare in Georgia, according to the NWS. The record for snowfall on Christmas in Atlanta was 1.6 inches in 1881. The record amount of rainfall precipitation on Christmas in the Atlanta area was 2.06 inches in 1945.
