AT&T recently installed a new mobile internet cell site on Ga. Highway 213 near Mansfield that will boost the company’s 4G access in the area.

The new site will provide customers with better voice, data and download/upload speeds, according to spokeswoman Ann Elsas. The exact location of the cell site was not provided.

AT&T launched its LTE (long-term evolution) service in the area March 2013.

“Our goal is for our customers to have an extraordinary experience, and they’ll be able to download, upload, stream and game faster than ever before on our 4G LTE network,” said Paul Chambers, AT&T regional director of external affairs. “As part of the Mansfield community, we’re always looking for new opportunities to provide enhanced coverage, and our investment in the local wireless network is another way we’re accomplishing that.”

The upgrade is part of AT&T’s Project Velocity IP (VIP), a three-year investment plan announced last fall to expand and enhance its IP broadband networks and meet customers’ growing desire for high-speed Internet access and new mobile, app and cloud-based services. The company is adding cell sites around the nation.

Both Covington and Newton County officials have reported an increase in the number of companies applying to place new cell towers in the county.

The company pointed to comparison studies by PC Magazine and TechHive.com that listed AT&T as having the fastest 4G LTE network in major markets across the U.S.
