Once again, it was Covington’s scenic courthouse and town square that nabbed the city a part in a prominent film.

"The Covington courthouse was a perfect choice for ‘Footloose’ because it matched the overall tone of the film," said Location Manager Ryan Schaetzle in an e-mail. "The Production Designer, Gary Steele, was looking for the quintessential small town American council chamber and I think this building fits it to a "T." Throw in the classic town square and the choice was easy."

"Footloose" is preparing to film in Newton County’s Historic Courthouse Sept. 17, 20 and 21. County Administrative Assistant John Middleton confirmed that the county had reached an agreement with the filming company. The Newton County Board of Commissioners will move it’s regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 21 to the judicial center.

Hundreds of locals attended an extras casting call to fill roles as farmers, speedway racetrack fans, ladies and gentlemen dressed in their Sunday best, cheerleaders and high school athletes, women and men who work with their hands and line dancers.
