Rotary firearms safety day

Safety first: Newton County Sheriff's Sgt. Randy Downs shows Rotarian Dr. Steve Whitworth how to properly disarm a Glock pistol at Saturday's Firearms Safety Class 2010 hosted by the Covington Rotary Club and the Covington Police Department. The full day of training at the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Camp on Ga. Highway 36 included instruction for a variety of firearms, briefings of Georgia Code, lunch and practical application of the lessons learned at the camp's firing range. Rotary officials wished to thank Arvo Bowen of the Covington Police Department for his help in organizing Saturday's event as well as other participating instructors Anthony Walden, Daniel Seals and Chuck Groover, all of the CPD, Wayne Scott, Walt Taylor and Randy Downs, all of the NCSO, Harry McCann and Beverly Thomas of DeKalb Technical College and Alan Seabron of Covington Explorers.
