Members of Covington's healthcare community will now be honored annually by the Rotary Club.

The Rotary Club of Covington presented Emily Jo Yarbrough, a nurse at Newton Medical Center, with its inaugural Nurse of the Year Award.

She has worked with Newton Medical Center since 1984 and will celebrate her 27th anniversary at the center in September.

"When I was a baby nurse, she helped orient me in the hospital," said Becky Bailey, Yarbrough's manager at the medical center.

The award is given to a nurse who displays excellence in the practice of nursing and in leadership.

According to Yarbrough's nomination letter, she displays professionalism at all times and is one of the most well-rounded members of the staff. Members of the hospital staff said that she is hard-working and they can turn to her for help in any situation.

"Jo is full speed ahead," Bailey said. "I am so honored to work with her."

Yarbrough accepted her award from Tommy Davis, Newton County coroner and member of the Rotary Club.

Davis said he works closely with the hospital and that she is a key staff member.

Yarbrough gave a brief thank-you to the Rotary Club and the Newton County Medical Center.

"It is such a joy to work with the hospital's staff and administration" she said. "I enjoy helping to keep the hospital growing."

Yarbrough continues to contribute to the staff and has not let the current trends in healthcare outdate her.

"She stays current with advancements in healthcare science and keeps the hospital working efficiently," said Jim Weadick, hospital administrator for the medical center.
