Newton Citizen to leave local office

The Newton Citizen newspaper is moving out of its Covington office April 12 and will operate out of its Rockdale Citizen office in Conyers for at least a few months while the company seeks another building to lease in Newton County.

The Newton Citizen has been leasing a 2,800 square foot office in the Covington Gallery shopping center, located off Turner Lake Road, which is anchored by Kmart. The lease expires at the end of April, according to publisher J.K. Murphy.

Murphy said the Newton Citizen newspaper product will not change and the paper will continue to publish five days a week, Tuesday through Friday and on Saturday.

“While we are looking for less expensive quarters in Covington, the Newton Citizen will continue to publish as it does now. No staff or product changes are being made. Our customers will see no difference in the quality they have come to expect from our service and our product,” Murphy said in an email. “The change in location reflects our efforts to become more efficient and operate more smoothly… When I find a great deal on office space (in Newton County), we’ll take it.”

According to the Newton Citizen’s website, it has published in Newton County since April 2004; the paper was originally published as a zoned edition of the Rockdale Citizen for several years before it was launched as a stand-alone publication, the company said.
