A Covington man was injured after reportedly being attacked with his own baseball bat early Monday morning.

Officers from the Covington Police Department were called to a home on Perry Alley, where they spoke with a man who said his roommate had been attacked by 26-year-old Charles Corey Williams, who reportedly lived across the street at a home on Mill Street.

Police then spoke with the victim, who reportedly met them outside, limping and holding his left arm, and with a swollen and bruised eye and face. Officers also noticed injuries to the victim’s hands, sides, legs and thighs.

The victim allegedly told officers that Williams came to the door and was beating on it. When he answered the door, Williams reportedly asked him, "What’s up?" using a derogatory term to refer to the victim. When the victim told Williams that he needed to leave and attempted to close the door, Williams reportedly pushed the door open, flicked a cigarette in the victim’s face, and forced his way inside.

According to reports, the victim told officers that he walked away from Williams and was heading toward his bedroom when he was pushed down, and the last thing he remembered was getting hit from behind.

He couldn’t remember when the assault stopped, but did remember waking up and attempting to get up from the floor.

The victim’s roommate said he heard screaming and forced his way inside the home and found Williams standing over the victim. The roommate reportedly told officers that he ran to his room to get a bat and Williams ran away. He said the victim also kept a baseball bat in his room for protection and the bat was found discarded at the front door, according to reports.

After a Newton Medical Center doctor confirmed that the victim’s injuries (which included a fractured bone in his arm) likely came from blunt force trauma — like that caused by a baseball bat — officers located Williams and arrested him on charges of battery, criminal trespass, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and public drunk.

It is unclear what, if anything, provoked the attack.
