ATLANTA - The Music Midtown festival is returning to Atlanta with Coldplay set to headline, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced Wednesday.

The festival, which will include 10 acts, will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, in Piedmont Park, Reed and Live Nation President Peter Conlon said. They're hoping to add a Sept. 23 show, but the acts have not been confirmed, Conlon said.

"We have thousands of people who live, work and play here who happen to love music, who want to be able to enjoy a great concert or a great festival right here at home in the heart of the city," Reed said.

The first Music Midtown festival was held in 1994 and drew as many as 300,000 people over a spring weekend. The three-day festival was held annually for 12 years, with three stages stretched through several blocks in Midtown Atlanta and 100,000 tickets available for each day. But organizers canceled it in early 2006, saying it was too expensive.

Conlon stressed this was a new festival in a different venue.

"This isn't the 13th year of Music Midtown," he said. "This is the first year of Music Midtown."

Other bands set to play are: The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant, Manchester Orchestra, Young The Giant, Band of Skulls, Joy Formidable, The Constellations, Mona and The Postelles. Conlon said 55,000 tickets will go on sale July 16 at 10 a.m. for $55 apiece. Shows will start at noon and wrap up at 11 p.m.

The city and Live Nation haven't signed a long-term agreement, but Reed and Conlon said they hope the festival will once again be an annual event.

A portion of the proceeds from this year's festival will go toward funding recreation centers and after-school activities for young people in Atlanta as part of the mayor's Centers of Hope initiative.
