Memorial Day festivities ended in one fatality and multiple arrests in Newton County over the holiday weekend.
A 22-year-old man, Andrew Stoddard, was killed in a single car accident on Boogers Hill Road. Authorities responded at 4:55 a.m. and found Stoddard and his 1999 Dodge Ram. According to friends of Stoddard, he had been at a party in the area that evening. The Georgia State Patrol trooper who worked the accident could not be reached as of press time for more details of the accident.
According to the GSP, they worked four DUI’s over the weekend. The Covington Police Department had four DUI’s in the city as well. And Kevin O’Brien, deputy chief of operations with Newton County Fire said that the fire department helped with eight accidents with injuries over the long weekend.
Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Department worked 22 accidents; six were accidents with injuries, nine speeding citations, 12 seatbelt violation citations issued, nine for not using child safety restraints and one DUI arrest.
