Age:
- 58
Education Background:
- Bachelor of Science – Accounting from West Georgia College (now The University of West Georgia)
Professional Background:
- I have over 35 years of business experience. I started my career as an accounting manager/director at Turner Broadcasting. Since then, I have held a variety of technology management positions in the financial services industry – working for Checkfree/Fiserv, SunTrust Bank, and The Home Depot. I hold several certifications in areas of Project Management, Process Improvement, and Product Management. My wife and I also own a small, boutique travel agency, Scoggins Travel, an affiliate of Kingdom Destinations, where we book and consult on travel throughout the world. Currently, I am the president of the Clark’s Grove Neighborhood Association and volunteer with Newton Trails.
Why did you decide to run for this office?
- In recent years, people have focused too much on federal and state elections. I believe, in fact I know, that local government is the most effective way to create community and serve each other. I decided it was time to stop talking about these things and take action. We’ve lived in the West part of the city for the last 3 years. It seems that the West does not get nearly the attention that the East does. I decided to do something about it.
What do you believe is the biggest issue facing your municipality, and, if elected, how do you plan to address it?
- It’s very clear to me that the biggest issue facing our city is the growth of Covington and the surrounding area. It’s not going to stop. With this growth comes traffic concerns, lack of housing for those who want to move here, a heavy load on infrastructure, increased crime, and potentially a negative impact on the small town feel of the historic district including the square. Someone with a lot of experience dealing with big, real-world problems needs to lead the management of the growth.
Finally, what do voters need to know about you?
- Having been to, listened to, or watched many council meetings, I’ve noted that at least 60% of what the council does is budget, financial, or business related. My experience as an accountant and many years of business experience dealing with tens of millions of consumers gives me a unique perspective and abilities to serve the city and the people who live here.
