Man shot after pointing gun at deputies

Newton County deputies were involved in a shooting around 2:15 a.m. Saturday after being called to a residence on Melton Way, off Butler Bridge Road in the western part of the county.

The deputies were told there was a man firing shots into the air and that one round had actually entered a home. When they arrived they found the man - whose name is not yet being released - with a shotgun.

Deputies ordered the man, thought to be in his late-20s, to drop the gun and he refused, instead pointing it at two deputies. They then opened fire on him.

He is currently being treated at an area hospital. He has been charged with six counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, possession of a firearm and reckless conduct.

The GBI will be taking over the investigation at this point, which is common practice.
