A 28-year-old Covington man has been arrested and charged with having sex with a 12-year-old girl he met online.

The girl's family was arrested, too, after they confronted the tween.

Gary Alexander Washington II has been charged with statutory rape, child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, interference with custody and sodomy and remains in the Newton County Detention Center.

According to Newton County Sheriff's Lt. Keith Crum, the girl had posted her information on an explicit website, citing her age as 19. She met Washington online and the two arranged to meet.

The girl left with Washington one night without her parents' knowledge. The next morning, her family discovered that she was gone and contacted the sheriff's office to report her missing.

Deputies responded to her home. While searching the area, they saw a dark-colored vehicle enter the subdivision. When they made a traffic stop, they identified the girl in the car with Washington and he was arrested.

That's when the family got involved.

Crum said that the girl's mother, 51, her father, 50 and her 26-year-old brother arrived at the scene as they were arresting Washington. The girl's mother began to hit her daughter in the head and face in front of deputies. The mother was arrested and charged with simple battery under the Family Violence Act.

The girl's brother and father got involved as well and were arrested for obstruction. They were all transported to the Newton County Detention Center along with Washington. It is unclear where the juvenile went at that time.
