Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home Creekview Boulevard after a call came in that a man was attempting to hit a woman with a chainsaw.

According to Newton County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, when deputies arrived at the home, they met with the victim and her daughter and found that 52-year-old Arthur Lee Coleman and his wife had been in a physical altercation.

It was later found that Coleman had not gone after his wife with a chainsaw but did reportedly attempt to hit her with a sharp household tool in the presence of three minor children.

It is unclear why the two were fighting, but there was enough evidence to arrest Coleman, according to Mitchell, and charge him with simple assault, Family Violence Act battery and obstruction of officers and third degree cruelty to children.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be pending.
