A 61-year-old Covington man was arrested for DUI after getting into an accident in front of a liquor store Thursday night.

Officers from the Covington Police Department were called to an accident outside S&S Package Store on Monticello Street around 8:30 p.m. One of the drivers said she had been traveling south when a man, later identified as Horace Heard, turned in front of her, attempting to get into the package store’s parking lot.

When officers initially questioned Heard, he denied driving and said that the other man with him had been the driver. After several minutes questioning the other man, reports say he told officers, “Naw, he [Heard] was driving the van.”

Reports indicate that officers could smell alcohol coming from Heard when they spoke to him and that his eyes were bloodshot and glazed over. When asked if he’d been drinking, he reportedly told them he’d had, “a couple of beers when I got off work”

Heard allegedly agreed to perform sobriety tests. He told officers that he did have “a fake right leg” that might hinder his ability to perform some of the tests. After failing several tests that did not involve his leg, Heard was asked to pick a leg on which to do a one-leg stand. He picked his left leg but was still unable to perform that test correctly. A breath test showed he was at .133.

Heard was transported to the Newton County Detention Center where he remains, charged with DUI and failure to yield.
