Local man escapes burning car crash

A local man was pulled from his vehicle after it burst into flames following a single-car accident Tuesday afternoon.

According to officials from the Georgia State Patrol and Newton County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around noon when the man was travelling north on Flat Shoals Road. The vehicle crossed into the southern lane and off the shoulder of the road where it struck a mailbox and then a hit a tree head on.

According to reports from the NCSO, the vehicle then exploded, and by the time troopers from the GSP had arrived, it was fully engulfed in flames. Two witnesses were able to pull the man from his blazing vehicle.

The reporting NCSO deputy indicated in his report that the accident may have happened due to the man being on prescription medication at the time. According to reports, several bottles of medication were found in his possession and he appeared to be extremely disoriented.

No charges were filed in the case. The driver insisted he was fine and allegedly refused medical treatment.
