The 2013 Newton County Special Olympics kicked off Monday as volunteers, athletes and participants marched, walked and drove from Home Sharp Stadium to the downtown square in a parade, waving to the spectators gathered for the festivities.
Parade participants returned to Sharp Stadium for the annual event’s opening ceremonies, where a banner contest was held, the Special Olympic oath was recited and graduating special education seniors from each of the high schools conducted a torch run.
Track and field events continue Wednesday at Sharp Stadium, with high-school and adult athletes competing. Entertainment and other activities will be provided between the events.
Closing ceremonies will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Friday at The Church at Covington, 11975 Ga. Highway 142, Oxford.
