Johnston: A bright future ahead for Covington

Dear city of Covington residents,

It certainly doesn’t seem like 12 months ago we were preparing to usher in a new year. A lot has happened in 2015 and I am proud to report that Covington is bigger and stronger today than it was a year ago. There are a lot of people responsible for that growth, from city officials and community leaders guiding us with their vision to business owners showing faith in Covington by expanding or moving their operations here. Everyone has pitched in to move Covington forward together.

However, the most important piece of the puzzle responsible for getting us where we are today is you, the citizen. Without you being a part of the workforce, shopping locally, volunteering and showing up at civic events, we would have no community.

The future of Covington is very bright and I am honored that I get to help steer the big ship that is our city. The proposed development of Covington Towne Center is progressing and will be a fantastic thing for our city when it comes to fruition. The Square continues to enjoy a renaissance and two new restaurants are currently under renovation with scheduled openings in 2016.

We will start 2016 with two new city council members and I welcome them and look forward to their new ideas. Two current council members will be moving to other endeavors in 2016. The contributions that Councilwoman Janet Goodman and Councilman Keith Dalton made to the city of Covington are immeasurable. I want to thank them both for their leadership, guidance and hard work leading the City and getting us to the solid ground and prosperity we enjoy today. Mrs. Goodman and Mr. Dalton have worked tirelessly for years advancing Covington and their efforts will continue to be felt for generations.

Lastly, I want to invite you to take a few moments over the holidays and reflect on everything you are thankful for. I hope that your needs are being met and through hard work your wants can be taken care of. If your basic needs are not being met, there are plenty of resources in Covington to offer some assistance. If you need some guidance, get in touch with City Hall. We have a group of people there who are happy to help.

I want to wish each one of you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. It is a great time to live in Covington and if we are all pulling the rope in the same direction, there is no limit to where we can go. I am so thankful to be a part of a community like Covington.

If you have any questions or feedback, please send me a note at rjohnston@cityofcovington.org or call me at 770-262-1001. I’d love to hear from you. I hope you have a very happy and healthy 2016.

Your friend and mayor,

Ronnie Johnston
