According to local law enforcement officials the Labor Day weekend - Friday through Monday - was a quiet one.

The Newton County Sheriff's Department reported four DUI arrests, two underage drinking arrests and one arrest for public intoxication. Only one accident with injuries was reported and occurred at the intersection of Ga. Highway 142 and U.S. Highway 278.

"It was quite uneventful this year," said NCSO Cpl. Anthony Washington, "kind of a scary quiet."

The Covington Police Department netted seven DUI drivers during the holiday period. Det. Daniel Seals said typical holiday weekend arrests were down from last year.

The Georgia State Patrol reports 2,231 crashes with 614 injuries and nine deaths over the weekend. While the number of crashes was more than originally estimated by GSP, the number of deaths was half of the expected number. In 2008, there were 1,660 accidents over the Labor Day weekend, resulting in 798 injuries and 19 deaths.
