COVINGTON, Ga. - Construction at the intersection of Henderson Mill Road and Highway 36 is expected to be completed early spring, Georgia Department of Transportation District Communications Specialist Kyle Collins said.

With an original completion date scheduled for August 2017, GDOT placed the contractor, Knight and Associates, Inc., in default of the contract and a surety contractor took over. Since then, work has progressed.

“We see it being complete around the end of March approximately,” he said. “Certain activities such as paving and pouring concrete are affected by the cold weather, but overall this will not hold up construction.”

Tasks completed to date

  • First stages of new construction on new realignment
  • Curb and cutter on Flat Shoals Road (Sidewalk coming possibly next week)
  • Poured concrete strain poles at the intersection of the new alignment of Henderson Mill Road and Highway 36

Construction activities remaining before this is open to traffic

  • Paving of SR 36, new alignment, Steele Rd and the local access road
  • Construction of cul-de-sac on local access road
  • Paving of all widening on SR 36, Steele Rd, and Flat Shoals Road
  • Installation on concrete medians on SR 36
  • Final grading on slopes, ditches, etc.
  • Signal installation and activation at the intersection of the new alignment of Henderson Mill Rd and SR 36 and at the intersection of SR36 and Flat Shoals Rd / Steele Rd.
  • Striping.

The project will realign Henderson Mill Road approximately 0.19 miles south of its existing intersection. Traffic signals will then be constructed at the existing intersection of Highway 36 and Flat Shoals Road/Steel Road and at the realigned Henderson Mill Road intersection.

“The existing intersection creates a ‘five-point’ environment, which is not desirable for optimal safety and operational efficiency,” Collins told The News in January. “This project will regulate currently uncontrolled access points from the adjacent properties to State Route 36, Steele Road and Flat Shoals Road and increase sight distance for drivers approaching all sides of the intersection.

“This is a busy intersection that we feel will function better with the realignment and traffic signals additions. When complete, the likelihood of accidents will be greatly reduced as this county continues growth.”
