ATLANTA (AP) - Teachers who cheat on standardized tests in Georgia would forfeit any bonuses they earn for student scores under a bill approved by House lawmakers.

Democratic Rep. Billy Mitchell of Stone Mountain said his legislation would make sure teachers don't prosper from breaking the law. The bill passed Tuesday in the House by a vote of 140-2. It now heads to the state Senate.

His legislation was inspired by a cheating scandal in the Atlanta Public Schools.

A state investigation last year revealed widespread cheating by educators in nearly half of Atlanta's 100 schools dating back to 2001. The former school district superintendent and other educators who received bonus money for the inflated test scores have not been required to return it.
