From pantry to park

A group of Oxford College of Emory University students are turning an old food pantry site into a community park.

The students are transforming the Community Food Pantry on Brown Street, originally the home of the Ginn Motors body shop, into the park as part of a freshman seminar class, according to a release.

The land for the park became available after the pantry moved to Turner Lake Circle and the building was demolished. The park will include a picnic area, landscaping, and a mural designed by Mimi Hacking, the student leader for the group.

The project is sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Covington.

The seminar is required of new students at Oxford and includes a group community service project. The project is designed to help the students to learn about the community and experience the college’s commitment to community engagement while bonding with classmates.
