Almost 50 people braved the drizzly conditions Thursday afternoon in order to play in the inaugural Richard Rawlins Golf Classic — a fundraiser organized by members of the Covington Kiwanis Club to benefit the Miracle Field and the Newton County Foundation for Educational Excellence.

The first place team consisted of Cham Stone, Frank Turner Jr., Scott Willis and Henry Colberth. On the 18th hole, Colberth made an eagle with a 90 yard shot, which secured his team’s spot at the top. Prizes were $100 per team member.

Second place team members were Jimmy Tanner, Kacy Orr, Nathan Kratzert and Scott Harpe ($50 per player); third place team members were Greg Rawlins, Brook Collins, Tony Smith and Ashley Smith ($25 per player).

Torry Losch won $125 in the putting contest. John Frianco won closet to the pin and Mark Eagle had the most accurate drive; both received a club courtesy of the James Anderson Golf Shop.

Almost every one of the winners donated their prize money back to Kiwanis to be dispersed evenly to the two benefitting non-profit organizations.
