Earth Day: Oxford College to unveil solar-panel project

Oxford College will observe Earth Day by focusing on the sun. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at April 22 at 12 p.m. on the lawn of Lil’s Dining Hall at Oxford College on Pierce and Wesley streets.

The ceremony will be attended by Dean Stephen Bowen, Oxford Mayor Jerry Roseberry and dignitaries from the local area and Emory University.

The project is the first solar-panel project for the college. Earlier this year the panels were installed on the south side of Haygood Dormitory. The panels produce electricity that powers a water pump, which is used to irrigate a nearby campus vegetable garden with collected rainwater. When the pump is not in use, the electricity is returned to the grid.

Other activities will include tours of the solar-panel area and the vegetable garden, a hands-on demonstration of a Zipcar, a telescope with special filters to allow direct viewing of the sun and opportunities and information about other sustainable practices.

Parking will be available on nearby streets.
