Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Referendum (Vote for One)

Shall a 1 percent sales and use tax be imposed in the special district of Newton County for a period of time not to exceed six years and for the raising of an estimated amount of $57,600,000 for the purposes of funding the payment of general obligation debt; design, renovation and expansion of the Newton County Judicial Center; design, renovation and construction of recreation facilities for the County (including Miracle Field), City of Porterdale and City of Newborn; design and construction or purpose of a Multi-use Community Facility; acquisition of land for a cemetery; design and renovation of County Animal Control Facility; design and renovation of County Juvenile Court Program space; design and renovation of the Historic Jail; design and construction of a County Agricultural Facility; design and construction of a County Fire Station; design and expansion of the Newton Medical Center Emergency Room; acquisition of public works equipment and fire services equipment; county fleet replacement; airport improvements for the City of Covington; water system improvements for the City of Oxford; design and renovation of the Porterdale Gym for the City of Porterdale; facility improvements for the City of Newborn; and road, street, bridge and transportation projects for Newton County and the Municipalities of Covington, Mansfield, Newborn and Porterdale?

Early voting for the 2011 SPLOST election began today and will run through March 11.

You can vote from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the Newton County Administration Building, 1113 Usher St. N.W. in Covington.

The election will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 15 at the county's standard voting precincts.

You must be registered to vote by Feb. 14. Check registration status at the Georgia Secretary of State's website, sos.ga.gov/mvp. To register, present a valid photo ID to the county board of elections in the administration building and fill out appropriate forms.
