Covington man arrested in copper theft

A man reportedly seen crawling from under a house with a bag filled with copper pipes was arrested Friday on a felony burglary charge.

According to a Covington Police Department report, Matthew Seth Spears, 32, was arrested just after 3 p.m. after he reportedly was seen crawling out from under a home on Hill Street. The homeowner and a neighbor reportedly followed Spear and saw him with a red and black bag with copper pipe inside, according to police.

Officers found the man along Central Avenue, and found a bag filled with pipes in a wooded area off Washington Street.
Spears was arrested and taken to the Newton County Detention Center.
