County youth sports set for webcast

Youth sports broadcasts are back on the air in Newton County, but you'll need a PC instead of a television to watch them.

The Newton County Recreation Commission will begin live webcasts of football games this fall. The recreation board on Monday reached an agreement with Harold White, owner of EGN Creations, to broadcast the games for a fee and a share of any advertising revenue.

Recreation commission games used to be replayed on cable television.

White has broadcast his sons' games using Ustream.tv, so that grandparents and other relatives who live out of state could watch the games.

He will store copies of the games on a server so that they can be downloaded and viewed later. He envisioned the broadcasting tool as another vehicle for advertising and envisioned the venture would pay for itself.

The web page, which would essentially be a recreation TV channel, could also play other programming when games weren't being broadcast, White said.

White will broadcast one game at a time, but if revenues increase, he will expand the business and broadcast more games. The games will also include commentary, which could be done by high school students looking for practical experience in sports broadcasting.

NEWTON COUNTY — Around 10 a.m. on Thursday, a head-on collision on Highway 212 left two young adults dead and a third hospitalized.

Navarro, Smith and New were not believed to be wearing seatbelts when the collision occurred.

The driver of the box truck was not reported to have suffered any injuries.
