CPD Fuzz Run expects record numbers

COVINGTON, Ga. - Covington Police Department (CPD) Chief Stacey Cotton said 3,100 people have registered for Saturday’s Fuzz Run in downtown Covington, making it the largest crowd at the event to date.

“We’ve never had over 3,000 runners before,” he said. “So we not only broke it in the pre-registrations but there’s no telling what’s going to show up Saturday morning. We may have more than 4,000 people there because normally we get a good walk-up crowd.”

The Fuzz Run is in its 34th year and has been voted the “Best Race in Georgia” for four consecutive years by runners participating in the “Run and See Georgia Grand Prix Series.” All of the proceeds from the race go to the Covington Police Who Care fund.

Cotton said Li-Way Trucking has partnered with the Police Who Care fund to provide a tractor trailer to take hurricane relief for Houston.

“If you want to come visit us at the Fuzz Run, bring some items to help out with disaster relief and Houston sure would appreciate it,” he said.

Cotton suggested bringing water, non-perishable foods, clothing, diapers and anything else that may be needed. He emphasized that all items need to be unopened and in new condition.

Managed by Orion Racing, the race is professionally timed and a Peachtree Road Race Qualifier. Starting and ending at the Covington Police Department, the 1-mile fun run begins at 8 a.m., followed by Mary Beth’s Bird Run (Dash) for ages 5 and under at 8:15 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 8:30 a.m. There will be overall and age group awards given for the 5K race. The top three boys and top three girls will receive awards for the fun run/walk.

An expo will precede the race on Friday, Sept. 8 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration packets will be available at the expo or on the day of the race. Race day registration begins at 6 a.m. on Sept. 9.

Race day registration is $35. To run the 1-mile fun run, registration is $25. T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered runners. The cost for kids age 5 and under for Mary Beth’s Red Bird Run (Dash) is $10 and includes a t-shirt.
