Covington and Newton County firefighters battled a fire Thursday night in a storage center behind the Fred's shopping center off U.S. Highway 278.

Covington Assistant Fire Marshal Tony Smith said the fire started around 7:20 p.m. and only half of the storage units had actually caught fire as of 8:30 p.m. Firefighters were trying to prevent the fire from spreading to the other half of the building. The cause of the fire was unknown Thursday night.

Firefighters were able to save a blue Ford Mustang. There were reports of heavy ammunition in one of the units which had not caught fire, but none of the ammunition had yet exploded from heat.
