Downtown Covington will get a little sweeter this fall, as Sweet Treats goes under new ownership and concentrates more on offering a variety of baked goods.

Covington residents Christina and J.D. Carter purchased Sweet Treats, Sept. 1 after previous owners offered the bakery to the couple.

"I had been baking out of my basement for a while and then we walked in one day, and they knew that I baked cakes and they offered it to us," Christina said. "It was perfect timing. I had been baking for my family for the past two and half years, and the previous owners had all decided to go back to school and were really busy."

Sweet Treats, located in downtown Covington since 2009, has focused on providing custom cakes; however, the Carters plan to turn the focus more on an assortment of baked goods.

"It was built around custom cakes for every occasion, that was their slogan, but for us, we want to do more homemade bakes," Christina said. "I'll be baking pies, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, a lot of different things."

However, Christina said she will still do decorative baked items for special occasions and will have help from the previous owner Pam Dugan.

"Mrs. Pam is going to help and stay here for the transition for the next few months and train me on the techniques that I'm not familiar with," she said. "Most of them I can do, but I'm just not too familiar with."
The Carters also plan to have the bakery open for longer hours, so that customers can stop by and enjoy treats throughout the day.

"We want to be open longer for people to stop in and enjoy their sweets," she said. "The shop has always been open in the evenings when the Dugans would get off work, but after Oct. 1, we plan to be open from noon to 7 p.m."
The Carters said they hope the bakery will grow to be thought of as Covington's number one bakery and a one-stop shop for everyone's sweet tooth needs.

"It really is a store built with love and with our family," Christina said. "Our family has been around us and supported us, and we want people to be enriched when they come here and get a little bit of happiness."

Sweet Treats will have cupcakes for residents to try Thursday at Newton County's annual Taste of Newton from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the County Administration Building in Covington.
