The Covington Vision Center is gathering canned and non-perishable goods for the Community Food Pantry and offering the incentive of discounts on exams and eyeglasses.

Customers without eye insurance can bring one can or non-perishable good to the store to receive a 20 percent discount on eye exams. They can bring in two or more cans to receive a 20 percent discount on both an eye exam and eyeglasses.

For customers with insurance, the store will either waive co-pays or offer discounts on larger co-pays.

Covington Vision Center, located in Newton Plaza, will begin Sunday and run through November.

"We've always liked helping the community," said Optician Pamela Vaughn. "I heard the food pantry was low and thought that was a perfect way."

The business has been in Newton Plaza for more than 40 year and is now owned by Dr. Nazir Khawaja, who bought the business in 2006. He has been an ophthalmologist for 30 years.

Covington Vision Center offers complete eye services including treatment of eye injuries and disease, consultation for diabetes and hypertension, glaucoma and diabetes laser treatment, prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses and LASIK surgery consultations.
