National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is less than a week away, and one business has plans to raise attention to the cause in a very rosy way. The Advanced Retirement Planning building, at 6140 Hannah St., will be painted pink.

Brian Byars, owner of ARP in Covington, said the business will be painted sometime this week and will remain pink throughout October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"We wanted to make sure that people remembered what the pink ribbons are about, and we want to make sure people remembered what the month is dedicated toward," Byars said.

ARP specializes in financial and retirement planning. Byars said, "About 90 percent or more of our business is all referral-based. So … we are donating $25 for every new client (in October) for breast cancer research," he said.

In addition, Byars said, the business will also raise money through its Facebook page — for every "Like" ARP receives the business will donate a couple of dollars — and will host some private functions where donations will be made.

"I’m only 40, and I had a classmate who was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer and I realized people of all ages can be diagnosed with cancer,’’ Byars said. "But you look at someone the same age as you and you feel like you’re still young and they’re suffering from this — it really kind of brings it home."

Byars said the business will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday to kick off its pink month.

Experts from area hospitals will be on hand to provide information about breast cancer and discuss ways the community can get involved.

"We hope that the expense we incur in basically painting our business twice — if it’ll get somebody to go get tested and to get an early diagnosis and treatment, then it’s worth every penny of it," Byars said.
