?After a brief summer hiatus, Tattersalls (formerly of Conyers) is back in business at the Porterdale Mill Lofts. The popular bookstore, which operated in Conyers for decades, opened up shop last week. In its new location, Tattersalls at the Mill has scaled back its book collection for the time being while its coffee shop has been re-emphasized. Its a little different, said store owner Kim Harper, adding that she sought to bring only the best qualities of the old Honey Creek Store with her in the move to Porterdale. Harper said the decision to open Tattersalls ahead of her original spring opening date was made when a space at the Lofts suddenly became available. There just wasnt any reason not to do it, Harper said. Longtime Tattersalls customer Lisa Hetzel followed the store in its move to Newton County. Im her biggest fan, Hetzel said of Harper. Hetzel went on to compare Tattersalls to The Shop Around the Corner, the fictitious childrens bookstore in the Meg Ryan movie Youve Got Mail. I want to talk to a person that reads, Hetzel said of why she likes shopping at Tattersalls. [Harper] knows her inventory. She knows her books. Harper said she plans to build up her book inventory overtime with many more books coming in next year. ?Right now there is a smattering of books on display for sale at the shop including books on politics, sports and self-help. Magazines are also for sale. Customers can continue to place orders for books that Tattersalls will place for them. Orders are typically filled within one or two days Harper said. Harper said she prides herself on having a diverse selection of books not found at Target, Wal-Mart or Borders. Ill carry the bestsellers and the Oprah books, but I want you to come in here and see books that youve never seen before, Harper said. Tattersalls will also feature an artist of the month, with new paintings from local artists given display space at the bookstore each month. While the shop is closed on Sundays, Harper said she plans to begin featuring special Sunday night events for trivia, Scrabble and live music. The Tattersalls coffee shop sells coffee, smoothies, milkshakes, apple cider and hot chocolate. ?Bagels, homemade biscotti and baked sweets from Sweet Treats in Covington are also available. I just want to do things a little differently, said Harper of her philosophy for the new store. New books are coming in every day.
