Burglars hit homes in same neighborhood

Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's Office are investigating two burglaries on Myrtle Grove Lane in Covington. Burglars hit the homes in the same neighborhood Dec. 11 and Dec. 16, making off with more than $13,000 worth of property.

According to the Dec. 11 incident report, burglars stole more than $4,500 worth of jewelry and office equipment. The victim reported missing 17 pieces of jewelry including several rings, necklaces and bracelets, and a fire proof safe.

Deputies were called out again to the neighborhood Dec. 16 to investigate another break-in about eight houses away from the home that was burglarized Dec. 11. The victim reported missing $3,550 worth of jewelry; two digital cameras, two video game systems and games, two laptops, a camcorder, and a DVD player, all valued at $5,350; and a Swiss watch and knife valued at $70.

There are no witnesses in the case.

Shoplifter nabbed at Wal-Mart
Officers with the Covington Police Department arrested Odilon Garcia Dec. 20 for stealing $31.97 worth of CDs from the Wal-Mart on Industrial Boulevard.

According to the incident report, Wal-Mart's security personnel said he was alerted by the customer service manager and the assistant manager that Garcia was trying to conceal items while he was looking at cameras. When he tried to exit the store, the alarm went off. Three CDs were found in his pocket.

Garcia was arrested and charged with misdemeanor shoplifting.
