A 52-year-old Covington man was arrested after reportedly assaulting his step-son for an alleged theft of money from his room.

Officers arrived at the home on Ridge Pointe Drive Tuesday afternoon and found the 21-year-old victim in the road in front of the home, holding a bloody baseball bat in one hand, his other hand wrapped in a bloody towel.

The victim’s mother reportedly told officers that her husband, later identified as Hugh Maddow, had noticed some coins were missing from his room and confronted the victim about the missing money. The victim denied taking the money or ever being in Maddow’s room and then, according to reports, Maddow allegedly became "enraged."

Maddow reportedly went into the garage and came back with a hammer, walking toward the victim as if to strike him. The victim’s mother stepped between the two, but she told officers her son and her husband began fighting.

At one point, the victim agreed to leave the home for the evening, but when he went inside to get a change of clothing, Maddow came at him again, this time with a kitchen knife. The victim sustained injuries to his hand and face.

Maddow was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and simple battery under the Family Violence Act.

Man attacks teen at her home

Investigators are looking for a man who reportedly attacked a 17-year-old girl at her home on Butler Bridge Road Monday evening.

Captain Keith Crum, with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, said that the teen was home babysitting her two younger siblings. They left the home around 7:20 p.m. and went to a neighbor’s house. When they returned, the back door was open, but there was no one in the home and nothing was taken. According to Crum, the teen called her neighbors to come and check the home.

When the neighbors left, she began preparing dinner for herself and her siblings. At one point, she stepped outside onto the back deck of the home and noticed a man approaching her rapidly. He reportedly swung at the teen and hit her on the side of the face. She ran back inside, locked the door and called 911.

The man is believed to frequent the Butler Bridge Road area. He is described as an older white male, with gray hair which was spiked with gel and a craggy face.

He was wearing a leather jacket and blue jeans. Other neighbors reported having seen the man in the area before.
