The man who shot himself after allegedly robbing a drug store on Wednesday died this morning.

Evan Tyler Erickson, 32, was pronounced dead at 8 a.m.

According to Capt. Ken Malcom with the Covington Police Department, Erickson went into Chip's Health Mart on Pace Street around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, brandishing a handgun and demanding morphine. After being given an undisclosed amount of medication, he fled.

Officers chased Erickson up Ga. Highway 142, and then drove over to Ga. Highway 81 where he turned south again, before finally turning down J. Roy Dial Road, a dead-end dirt road. He then shot himself.

He was breathing shallowly and was taken to Grady Hospital, according to Malcom.
