Alcovy Road traffic shift part of Hwy. 142 progress
GDOT

COVINGTON, Ga. - Thursday morning Newton County drivers will notice some changes to Alcovy Road.

Starting just after 8 a.m., Southeastern Site Development, Inc. will begin shifting traffic from north of City Pond Road through the State Route 142 intersection ending south of Avenue of Champions. The traffic shift will begin from the City Pond Road side moving vehicles to the west side of Alcovy Road and then back to the east side before leaving the project headed north. For those headed south on Alcovy Road to Covington, you will shift to the east side of the roadway and then to the west side before exiting the project.

The traffic signal equipment at Alcovy Road and SR 142 has been replaced. This planned switch will include new turn lanes at the intersection, which will relieve traffic congestion.

This $14.1 million contract was awarded for 1.6 miles of widening and reconstruction for additional lanes on SR 142 beginning at Interstate 20 and extending to Alcovy Road. The bridge over the CSX railroad is also being replaced.

The stage one construction portion of SR 142 is near completion including the bridge over the railroad. A traffic shift for this part of the project is a few weeks away with asphalt paving to complete and tie-in work on each end of SR 142.

Southeastern Site Development, Inc. has a June 30, 2019 completion date to have the job open to traffic.
