ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Athens police say more than 70 people were arrested for alcohol-related offenses surrounding a football game between the University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina.

Police Maj. Mike Hunsinger is in charge of downtown operations for Athens-Clarke police and told the Athens Banner-Herald the weekend was busy, but the number of arrests was comparable to many other times UGA has played a major SEC opponent.

Officials say most who were arrested were young adults strolling through downtown Athens carrying open containers, or were staggering while they walked.

Police say 20 people were charged with driving under the influence and arrests were also made for marijuana possession, underage drinking and public urination.

Authorities say arrests were made by Athens-Clarke police, UGA police and the Georgia State Patrol.
